The last surviving Tuskegee Airmen, Charles McGee has perished leaving his extended family behind. Here is more to learn about his wife and children.
Charles McGee was a distinguished American fighter pilot. He is best known as the first African-American fighter pilot who began his career with the Tuskegee Airmen.
McGee studied engineering at the University of Illinois. While he was a student, he was a member of the National Society of Pershing Rifles and Tau chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.
Charles was enlisted in the military in 1942 and shortly joined Tuskegee Airmen. Two years later, he was stationed in Italy where he flew fighting aircraft like Bell P-39Q Airacobra, North American P-51 Mustang, and so on.
McGee also encountered low-level strafing attacks and was promoted as a captain. He flew in more than 137 combat missions before returning to the US in 1944.
Following that, Charles served as the instructor for the North American B-25 Mitchell bomber until 1946. When the Second World War was over, he was deployed as the base operations and training officer at Lockbourne Army Air Field.
McGee was later posted to Aircraft Maintenance Technical Course but he never stopped being a fighter pilot. He retired as a colonel in 1973 with 409 combat missions and 6,308 flying hours.
In addition, Charles held respected positions in aviation post-retirement.

Charles McGee is survived by his extended family including children and grandchildren.
He was preceded by his wife, Frances Nelson in death. The couple married in 1942, the same year he was enlisted in the military.
After over 5 decades of ups and downs, Nelson passed away in 1994 leaving Charles behind. After 28 years of his wife’s demise, McGee also laid on the deathbed.
McGee welcomed three adult children and 10 grandchildren into this world. Moreover, he is also outlived by his 14 great-grandchildren.

As per the online obituary, Charles McGee died in his sleep on January 16, 2022.
He passed peacefully at his home in the presence of his family members. In fact, he was the last person to die from the Tuskegee Airmen.
McGee’s cause of death is aging. Although he has perished, his contributions will always be remembered and his memories will be cherished.
People across the globe have paid homage to the popular fighter pilot. Moreover, Charles’s funeral will be organized by the military.

Former US Military pilot, Charles McGee was born to parents Lewis Allen and Ruth Elizabeth McGee.
His father, Lewis was a World War I chaplain, unitarian minister and activist. On the other hand, his mother, Ruth was a homemaker.
Charles was raised alongside two siblings: a sister named Ruth and a brother named Lewis.
McGee’s grandfather was a victim of slavery but not him. Later, even his granddad was freed from enslavement.
