According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Hastings’ death was reported by a longtime acquaintance early this morning.

Yamiche Alcindor, a political reporter, tweeted the news of Hastings’ death, noting that “Hastings crusaded against racial injustice as a civil rights lawyer becoming Florida’s senior member of Congress.”

A federal judge overturned the impeachment, ruling that Hastings was wrongfully convicted by a 12-member jury rather than the entire Senate, but his exoneration was brief.

Later, in the case of another deposed judge, the Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that courts do not question the Senate’s authority to expel government officers from office.
